Mental Illness, emotional health, and the journey toward wellness.
Hello and welcome! I’m Laura! I’m a 30-something from just outside Detroit, Michigan, and have been a Michigander my whole life. I love writing, art, spending time with friends and family and, above all else, helping others. I also have also struggled with mental illness for most of my life, which is what this site is all about.
One in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide.
According to the World Health Organization, “One in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. Treatments are available, but nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental disorder never seek help from a health professional. Stigma, discrimination and neglect prevent care and treatment from reaching people with mental disorders, says the World Health Organization (WHO). Where there is neglect, there is little or no understanding. Where there is no understanding, there is neglect.”
This site is dedicated to the ongoing discussion and journey toward the de-stigmatization of mental illness. Whether you are here because you suffer from one or more mental illnesses yourself, or you’re here to learn more for a friend, family member, or your own knowledge, welcome. I am so glad you’re here. Take my hand and dive in fearlessly with me as we unpack mental illness and mental health together – the good, the ugly, and the in between. Every post you’ll read here will explore a different aspect of mental illness and mental health, from unpacking various illnesses… to coping techniques… to portrayals in media and everyday life… to the health care system. I’ll talk a little about my story and journey toward mental health, and would love to hear yours, as well. My commitment to you to is be fully candid and transparent in everything we discuss here. Mental illness can be a difficult, uncomfortable, and at times even controversial topic, which is all the more reason to explore it at length. Again, I’m glad you’re here. We’re all in this together. It’s never too late to support each other. This is our time. I hear you. I see you. Now, grab my hand, and let’s cont;nue.
